Travel to Liyu Brook of Puyuan Village for carp watching

Zhouning, located in the mountain area of Northeast Fujian, is a county sitting at the highest altitude of Fujian (more than 880 metres high) with the forest coverage rate of 70.9%. Zhouning county is gifted with many beautiful natural scenic spots such as Jiulongji Waterfall, Liyu Brook, Dishui Rock, and many others. Due to its cool weather in the summer, Zhouning is considered a good summer resort for visitors. Among all the scenic spots, Liyu Brook is one of the popular ones. 

 

Carp Brook is running through Puyuan Village


Liyu Brook or "Carp Brook", is located in Puyuan Village, about 5 kilometres away from Zhouning County. It is one of the scenic spots in Zhouning. The water source for the river is from Ziyun Mountainm which is has an altitude of 1448 metres. The river is 300 metres long and 5 metres wide and runs through the whole ancient Puyuan village. In the river, there are thousands of colorful carps swimming around and that is why the river is named Carp Brook. The biggest carps can reach 20 - 30 kilogram's. You can appreciate beauty of these colorful carps as they are not scared of people. Along the river, there are some shops and stores where you can buy the fish food.

The history of Liyu Brook can be dated back to the Song Dynasty. At that time, the ancestor's of the local people put the carps into the river so as to cleanse the water and set a rule to protect the carp. That is all the villagers must not catch the carps and the people who break the rule should be severely punished. The rule has been passed down from generation to generation. This has kept the carp well protected and grown into a large quantity. 


Also, there is a special and unique custom in Puyuan Village. The holding funeral ceremony for the dead carps. Near the end of Liyu Brook, there is a carp tomb between two trees for the burial of dead carps. Therefore, Puyuan Village can be also considered as a nature reserve for the carp.


When visiting Puyuan Village, one should not miss its historical sites. Some houses there are the ancient houses following the construction style of the Ming or Qing Dynasty. In the ancestral hall of the Zheng family, there are many exquisite wood carvings and statues with a long history.

1) Self-driving: Go to Ningde through Quanxia Highway - Fuquan Highway - Luoning Highway, and then turn to G104 National Highway to Carp Brook, Puyuan Village.

 

2) Use a travel agent:

 

Renting a van packaged with driver is the next best alternative. Call Apple Travel to organize a group tour. If you’ve a small group, The ideal number in the group is 5 or 6.
