Day 1 Arrive in Kunming

Arrive in Kunming, transfer to the hotel by yourself. (Note: airport pick-up is not included in the tour; no guide or driver service will be offered on this day).

Day 2 Kunming-Shilin-Yuanyang

Sightseeing: Stone Forest, Longshuba Rice Terraces

At 8:30 a.m., our English-speaking guide will pick you up in the lobby of your hotel. Then, you'll be driven to the Stone Forest (98 km, 1.5 hrs). The Stone Forest is an extremely rare geological phenomenon that formed 270 million years ago. The Stone Forest consists of 80 hectares of karst limestone pillars. It is home to the Sani People, a branch of the Yi minority. After the tour, drive 300 kilometers (six hours) to Yuanyang. After arriving in Yuanyang, if time permits, drive to enjoy views of the sunset over the Longshuba Rice Terraces, located 5 km away from Xinjie town.



Day 3 Yuanyang

Sightseeing: Duoyishu Rice Terraces, Shengcun Market, Bada Rice Terraces, Qingkou Village, Laohuzui Rice Terraces

Get up early in the morning to enjoy views of the sunrise at the Duoyishu Rice Terrace Fields. The terraced fields are spectacular, with layers upon layers stretching from the hillsides up to the mountaintops. After that, visit Qingkou Village, where the Hani people have lived for generations. Later, visit Bada Hani Rice Terrace and Shengcun Market. End today’s tour with the sunset at Laohuzui Rice Terraces.



Day 4 Yuanyang-Jianshui

Sightseeing: Zhu Family Garden, Confucius Temple, Jianshui Old Street, Jianshui Old Well

Depart in the morning from Yuanyang and drive to Jianshui (3 hrs). Visit the Zhu Family Garden, the so-called "Grand View Garden" of Southern Yunnan Province, which is a fine representation of Chinese residential houses of the Qing Dynasty (1644 to 1911). Later, visit the Jianshui Confucius Temple. This more than 700-year-old temple was built in the 22nd year of the reign of Zhi Yuan in the Yuan Dynasty (1285 AD). To end the day, stroll along Jianshui Old street and visit the Old Well in the old town.



Day 5 Jianshui-Kunming

Sightseeing: Take a sightseeing train from Jianshui to Tuanshan Village, Double Dragon Bridge

Today, you will ride on the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway. Take the train from Jianshui Town to Tuanshan Village and go through 12.82 km of narrow-gauge railway (soft class seat). Enjoy the views of fields and villages along the way. Visit the historical Tuanshan Village, which in 2005 was added to the list of internationally significant sites by the World Memorial Fund for Architecture (WMF). Visit Double Dragon Bridge, a 17-hole bridge measuring 148 meters long and 3-8 meters wide. Drive back to Kunming (4 to 5 hours) and check in at your hotel.



Day 6 Departure from Kunming

After breakfast, you may choose to:
1) Check out of the hotel before 12 noon, then transfer to the Kunming airport or railway station to leave Kunming per your own arrangements.

Day 1 Arrive in Kunming

Day 2 Kunming-Dali

Sightseeing: Stone Forest, Green Lake, Flowers and Birds Market

At 8:30 a.m., our English-speaking guide will pick you up at the lobby of your hotel. Then you'll drive to the Stone Forest (98 km, 1.5 hrs). The Stone Forest has 80 hectares of karst limestone pillars formed 270 million years ago. Then you'll transfer back to downtown Kunming (1.5 hours) to visit  Green Lake, and Flowers and Birds Market. Before the evening transfer to the railway station, take the overnight train to Dali.



Day 3 Dali

Sightseeing: Dali Old Town, Dali Ancient City Wall, Foreigner Street, Three Pagodas Temple, Xizhou Old Town, Zhoucheng Village, Erhai Lake Cruise by small boat

Early in the morning, arrive at the Dali Railway station. The local guide and driver will transfer you to the hotel to drop off your luggage. In the morning, you will visit the Three Pagodas Temple, and then cruise on east Erhai Lake by small boat. Later, head to Xizhou Town to appreciate the traditional courtyards of the Bai people, taste their fragrant three-course tea, and learn about their distinctive culture. Visit Zhoucheng Village for the Bai people's tie-dying workshop, where you'll have the opportunity to acquire some special souvenirs. At last, visit Ancient Dali Town, walk along "Foreigner's Street," and enjoy a relaxed evening with the local people.



Day 4 Dali-Lijiang

Sightseeing: Lijiang Old Town, Black Dragon Pool, Dongba Culture Museum, Baisha Village

After breakfast, transfer to Lijiang (2 to 2.5 hours), and enjoy views of beautiful farmland and ethnic villages along the way (only Chinese speaking driver with this transfer). Visit the scenic Black Dragon Pool and the Dongba Museum to explore the rich Naxi minority culture. Then explore Lijiang Old Town. Lijiang Old Town has a history more than 800 years; it was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997. Here you will see the wonderful wooden architecture of the Naxi people. You will explore the Mu’s Residence, Lion Hill, and Wangu Tower in the old town.



Day 5 Lijiang

Sightseeing: Yuhu Village, Former Residence of Joseph Rock, Shuhe Old Town

Today you will continue to have a relaxing tour in Lijiang. First stop is Joseph Rock’s former Residence in Yuhu Village. Joseph is an Austrian-American botanist and explorer, who lived in Yuhu village and other places of the region from 1922 to 1949. He was both a naturalist and a photographer, and the first foreign scholar to introduce Lijiang's ethnic culture to the western world. Later, enjoy a relaxed time in Shuhe Old Town, a UNESCO site that was one of the earliest settlements of the ancestors of the Naxi people and is famous for its ancient tea route.



Day 6 Lijiang - Zhongidan (Shangri-La)

Sightseeing: The First Bend of the Yangtze River, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Dukezong Old Town, Giant Prayer Wheel, Guishan Hill Park

At 7:30 a.m., pack up from your hotel. Then you'll drive about 60 km to the first bend on the Yangtze River, where you can enjoy a view of the great river's imposing gorge scenery. Visit the Iron Chain Bridge, the Red Army's Long March Memorial Monument in Shigu town (a.k.a. Town of the Stone Drum). The town got its name from a large, cylindrical, marble tablet shaped like a drum.

Later, hike in Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the deepest and most spectacular river canyons in the world, located upstream of the Yangtze River.

After hiking, drive to Shangri-La (2 hrs). Check in at the hotel. Then stroll around Dukezong Ancient Town, an important town of the Ancient Tea-horse Trade Caravan that stretched from Yunnan to Tibet and India. Hike up to the top of Guishan Hill to view the largest Prayer Wheel of the world and have a panoramic view of Shangri-La County and Dukezong Ancient Town.



Day 7 Zhongdian (Shangri-La)-Lijiang

Sightseeing: Songzanlin Monastery, Tibetan Family, Napahai Lake

In the morning, visit Napahai Lake, which is eight kilometers northwest of Shangri-La. Many rare birds live here, and they fly over the lake from September to March. The lake also has the largest grassland area in Shangri-La. Continue to visit the Ganden Songzanlin Monastery, the largest Tibetan monastery in Yunnan. Then stop to visit a local Tibetan family to learn about their life. After the tour, at about 3 p.m., transfer to Lijiang (4 hours). Check in at hotel in Lijiang.



Day 8 Departure from Lijiang

After breakfast, you may choose:
1) Check out from your hotel before 12 noon, then transfer to the Lijiang airport or railway station to depart Lijiang per your own arrangements.
2) Continue to prolong your stay in Lijiang
