Jinjiang in Fujian, the Shoe Capital of China

Jinjiang, the capital of Chinese brands

Jingjiang, aka China's Shoe Capital, is noted for its rapidly developing shoe and sportswear industry.

Jingjiang City, Fujian Province, aims to create a prosperous safe haven for all its citizens. Located on China's southeastern coast in Fujian Province, Jinjiang City's development mode is one of the nation's four modes for rural economic growth. The city ranks number one in Fujian Province's top 10 districts and has been included in the top 100 Chinese counties and cities in terms of national overall strength, for four consecutive sessions.

Once a year, Jinjiang buzzes with commercial activity when it hosts its annual International Footwear Exhibition, which takes place from April 18 to 20 this year, attracting manufacturers from across the world to the city in a bid to raise its place on the international trade stage. The city, nicknamed China's "Shoe Capital," reportedly produces one billion pairs of shoes annually.

Jinjiang is known across China for being a center of private enterprises in the leather, shoe and sportswear industries, and is home to a number of primary domestic brands, such as 361 degrees and Septwolves. The city is now determined to raise its global profile by attracting more international names to the area in order to further boost its manufacturing ability.

In order to promote its China-established brands on a wider scale, the city now looks towards mergers and acquisitions as well as other moves towards expansion by domestic enterprises. The annual Footwear Exhibition undoubtedly plays a vital part in this aspect.

Additionally, Jinjiang has undertaken a wide spectrum of projects in the industrial, educational, economic and social fields in order to create a prosperous safe haven for all its citizens, as demonstrated by its Technology Center. It describes its overall vision as the "Rise of a New City,” and aside from mere industrial planning, focuses heavily on “proper” employment, the employment of culture, equal healthcare for all, harmonious relocation and environmental protection.

Jinjiang aims to construct a city for its citizens. In terms of industrial planning, it continues to promote its leather, shoe and clothing reputation, but has also, for example, advanced its packaging industry (from candy wrappers to books and calendars), developed up-to-date manufacturing materials and expanded the heavy (agricultural) machinery manufacturing industry. “Proper employment” then refers to the right to work for all citizens, including proper housing, benefits and work circumstances.

Nevertheless, Jinjiang keeps track of its cultural heritage (employment of culture), for example, through its “Wudianshi” project. The project, which launched in 2012, focuses on the re-construction of the city’s original hutong area; that is to say, it relocates the original Ming and Qing Dynasty (1368-1912) buildings, renovates them, and in doing so recreates the hutong in a city government-protected area. Such a massive undertaking requires much effort and dedication, yet, so far, it seems to be running smoothly with a mixture of traditional Jinjiang and modern comfort already starting to appear in the area.
