Day 1: Perth

Whether you crave a fast-paced day of excitement or a relaxed day in the great outdoors, a popular way to explore Perth is by bicycle.

An extensive network of cycle paths trace through the city and along the banks of the Swan River, providing a safe and convenient way to explore at your leisure.

Before setting out, grab a cycle map - available at most metropolitan bicycle retailers. Follow the river, city and Kings Park route or create your own.

A popular circuit starts at the east end of Riverside Drive in the city, past Barrack Street Jetty, across the Narrows Bridge, through South Perth, over the Causeway and back to Riverside Drive.

Take the Kings Park (Perth??s Botanic Gardens) route to experience the natural beauty of the bush settings right on the edge of the city.

Appreciate views of the city from the bluff and Federation Walkway. You??ll discover several wildflower gardens and a tuart lawn before crossing the striking Water Garden Valley and entering the captivating cathedral of the Marri Woodland. Rest a while in the park??s leafy surrounds before setting off again.

For an upbeat adventure, there??s a wide range of water sports available on the Swan River.

Mill Point Road in South Perth is home to parasailing, or head for the South Perth foreshore and try your hand at sailing a catamaran down the river.

Pelican Point is the place for kite surfing lessons with equipment provided.

Perth is famous for its sunshine and fabulous climate regardless of the season, so soak it up at one of the many stunning white-sand beaches.

Just 10 minutes north of the city are the powder-like sands and excellent beachside facilities of Scarborough Beach where you can swim, surf, fish, skate, windsurf or shop to your hearts content ¨C but take time to sit on the shore too, listening to the waves and watching people stroll by.

Venture further up the coast for quieter beaches, and settle round a barbecue to refuel after a day of outdoor activity, as the sun sets over the magnificent Indian Ocean.

While Perth beaches can be explored in a day, you can also turn the experience into an extended getaway with a relaxing overnight stay.

There??s no shortage of accommodation options from oceanfront hotels, self-contained holiday apartments and five star resorts to backpacker hostels.
